ARLINGTON, Va. (WJLA) - Bargain hunters are having a remarkable impact on our cultural and corporate priorities. And Macy's, just like Target and Sears and Kmart, need to compete in order to stay in the running-- especially when it comes to Black Friday.
But some are questioning the obsession with shopping on a day reserved for family.
"It is not a shopping day. It is not a retail day at all," says Peggy Newman. "I think that's dreadfully unfortunate, and I would never go shopping on Thanksgiving day or Thanksgiving weekend. It's a time for family togetherness and if we don't value that, what should we be valuing?"
The race to get the very best prices takes first place for many, as at midnight on Black Friday, big box stores and corporate giants ramp up the sales. In other words, it’s a time when consumerism and shopping often trump Thanksgiving and turkey.
"Black Friday is the biggest shopping event of the year, and brings with it a level of fun and excitement to our customers around the nation," said Peter Sachse, Macy's chief stores officer.
"In a move to minimize the impact on associates, Macy's began planning early to allow associates the time to review available shifts throughout the holiday season, including on Thanksgiving weekend, and to volunteer for the shifts they prefer."
