(WJLA) - Macy's may soon become the latest major national retailer to throw its doors open to shoppers on Thanksgiving Day rather than waiting for Black Friday, USA Today reports.

Citing a Chicago Sun-Times report, Macy's will reportedly open its doors at five Chicago-area stores at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving and stay open for 24 hours.

It's not known if any other stores across the country would open for Thanksgiving, but if it happens, it would be the first time in the store's 155-year history that it'd be open on Thanksgiving Day itself.

Macy's would hardly be the first national retailer to open on Thanksgiving in attempt to get ahead of the Black Friday rush.

USA Today says that Toys R Us opened on Thanksgiving night two years ago. Last year, Walmart and Target were among numerous stores to do so as well.
