WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) - The secretary of state is one of, if not the most visible position in any cabinet.

For a secretary of state to be successful, they have to be on the same wavelength as the president that they serve.

That was not always the case between outgoing Secretary of State Tillerson and President Trump.

Rex Tillerson was CEO of ExxonMobil before being tapped to lead the Department of State. That company is huge. Being its CEO is actually a lot like running a country in itself. Think about this: Exxon’s revenues in 2015 were greater than the gross domestic product of most countries in the world, including Greece and Ireland.

Tillerson is his own man, he is used to being the boss.

In the end, in the executive branch, the president is the boss. Everyone else, including cabinet secretaries, are staff. Cabinet members are very influential staff. They have a lot of input, they lead huge groups of people, but they still serve at the pleasure of the president.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo is now the nominee to be the next secretary of state. Pompeo has developed a great rapport with President Trump. From North Korea to Iran, Pompeo is on the same page as the president. He is also well-versed in the chain of command. Mike Pompeo graduated first in his class from West Point and and is a veteran of the first Gulf War.

Here is the bottom line: Mike Pompeo is going to work very well with President Trump as his secretary of state. The Trump administration's foreign policy of "America First" is not going to change, but the message to the rest of the world will be more consistent with Pompeo as the messenger.
