USS Mahan deploys for first time since Navy sailor shot onboard
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The Norfolk-based USS Mahan left Monday on a five-month deployment to the Middle East.
The Navy says that after the ship - a guided-missle-destroyer - transits through the Mediterranean Sea, it will enter the Arabian Gulf and surrounding waters to conduct maritime operations and strengthen partner nations' maritime capabilities.
This will be the ship's first deployment since a sailor was shot and killed aboard the ship by a civilian gunman, who was later killed by Navy security forces.
The Navy says the sailor who died provided security at Naval Station Norfolk and was trying to save another sailor when the fatal shots were fired. The Navy has not released its investigation into the shooting.
