Sabrina Worrell, St. Peter's Catholic School teacher, awarded Golden Apple

      Local teacher Sabrina Worrell thought she was going to a school assembly this week for a sneak-peak of the student play "Annie.”

      But what she didn't realize was that all of St. Peter's Catholic School in Montgomery County was keeping a very big secret from her.

      There’s more than 1,400 teachers in the Archdiocese of Washington, and Worrell is one of only 10 to receive this year's Golden Apple Teacher of the Year award.

      The students loved how surprised Worrell looked.
      Worrell has helped students' reading skills so much, parents nominated her for the award.

      "I was overwhelmed,” Worrell says. “I was truly surprised."

      But for Worrell, there is no bigger honor than to help her students blossom.

      "To see their confidence grow with their ability to read, their self-esteem, is just so worthwhile," Worrell says. "Every student is different and you have to find a way to reach each and every one of them."
