7OYS: Pepco installs energy saver unit without notifying homeowner

SILVER SPRING, Md. (WJLA) -- While working on his yard, Silver Spring resident Steve Hammer noticed something strange: a device connected to his air-conditioning unit and attached to the side of his house.

At first he was confused. Then, he got mad.

“I called Pepco and you know, I told them I was outside and saw this box attached to my house and she said,{ } 'Oh, that is an energy saver box,'" explains Hammer.

Hammer says he has no idea how it got there or how long it has been there. He says the installation crew had to come through his gate, trek through his yard, and find his air conditioning unit behind his house in order to install the unit. He is wondering how Pepco could just do something like this without his permission.

“I said, well you know I never authorized you to put that energy saver unit in, and she said to hold on a minute; then she came back and said, 'We don't have any authorization either,'" he says.

At least the unit solves one mystery – Hammer now knows why his house occasionally gets very warm. The saver cuts off the unit.

According to Hammer, the customer service rep said that she would send someone out right away to remove the energy saver. But he worries about the impact it would have to just rip it out:

“Because you drilled into my brick and went into my air conditioning unit, I don't even know if it will work afterward. I don't want anything removed until I speak to a manager. I have yet to speak to a manager."

"I don't know what gave them the right to come do this," says Hammer.
